New Hampshire Senate Passes Bill to Expand Move-Over Law to Protect First Responders
The New Hampshire State Senate recently passed a bill that would expand the state’s move-over law to protect first responders. The current law requires motorists to move over when practical and safe for various roadside emergencies such as fires, collisions, and police traffic stops.
The new bill, introduced by Sen. Donovan Fenton, would add the requirement for drivers to reduce speed and steer a wide berth around stopped vehicles with their flashers on or other warning signals. The bipartisan measure, named after State Police staff sergeant Jesse Sherrill who was killed in a tragic accident, aims to improve safety for those working on the side of the road.
State Police Col. Mark Hall praised the Senate’s passage of the bill, emphasizing the importance of protecting the lives and safety of first responders. Fenton also honored Sherrill’s service by presenting a proclamation to his wife and children.
The bill has received widespread support, with testimony from State Police Lt. Chris Storm and AAA Northern New England manager Dan Goodman highlighting the importance of creating safer roadways and reducing traffic accidents and fatalities. Despite no opposition during the Senate’s vote, the bill will still need to be considered by the N.H. House before becoming law.
This legislation comes in response to tragic incidents involving first responders being struck and killed while working along roadways. By expanding the move-over law, New Hampshire aims to ensure the safety of those who risk their lives to serve and protect the public.
