A suspect has been identified in the 1972 murder of Phyllis Bailer, an Indiana woman found dead in a ditch with her unharmed 3-year-old daughter. Bailer and her daughter were traveling from Indianapolis to Bluffton to visit her parents when they went missing. Bailer was found with a gunshot wound and signs of sexual assault. DNA testing was not available at the time, but in 2024, a DNA profile was developed and in 2025, it was linked to Fred Allen Lienemann, a Michigan man with a criminal history who was killed in 1985. Lienemann had no known connection to Bailer, but if he were alive, he would have been charged with her murder. The investigation uncovered that Lienemann was killed in Detroit in a brutal manner involving a baseball bat and a fire. Police believe justice has been served in solving Bailer’s murder, despite not being able to charge the suspect due to his death.
