Rising Star at UNH – Feature in New Hampshire Magazine

UNH alumna Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, a former three-sport star, has a rich athletic background that includes playing soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse at the collegiate level. She excelled in all three sports, even making the National U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and winning a silver medal in the 1992 World Championship.

After her playing days, Weinberg-Hughes went into broadcasting and eventually married Jim Hughes, a respected coach and executive in the National Hockey League. Their three sons, Quinn, Jack, and Luke, have all become NHL stars, making history as the only American family with three brothers drafted in the first round.

Weinberg-Hughes, known as the queen of the Royal Family of American Hockey, remains actively involved in hockey, serving on the board of the USA Hockey Foundation and as a development consultant to the Women’s National Team. She was recently inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and the UNH Athletics Hall of Fame.

Despite their success, the Weinberg-Hughes family remains humble and grateful for the opportunities they have had in the world of sports. Ellen credits her alma mater, the University of New Hampshire, for being at the forefront of the women’s sports movement and shaping her athletic career. Her impact as a trailblazer and role model extends beyond New Hampshire, with colleagues and community members praising her dedication and commitment to her family and the sport.
