A federal judge ruled in favor of the Bow School District, stating that they were within their rights to remove two soccer dads from a girls’ game for wearing pink “XX” wristbands to protest biological males playing on girls’ teams. The judge denied the dads’ request for a preliminary injunction, stating that the school officials were justified in restricting their speech at the game. The ruling came after the dads expressed their displeasure with Bow High School allowing a biological male player, Parker Tirrell, to play on a girls’ team, following a court victory against New Hampshire’s law prohibiting this. The judge stated that the wristbands could be seen as demeaning and harassing to transgender students, and therefore the school had the right to intervene.
Critics of the ruling argue that it amounts to viewpoint discrimination and question the judge’s assertion that gender identity is “unalterable.” The judge has yet to rule on a permanent injunction sought by the parents, which would allow them to protest at school games and other events. Anthony Foote, one of the dads involved, expressed his intention to continue fighting for what he believes are the rights of women and girls, despite the court’s ruling.
