Sununu Declares He Will Not Run for Senate in 2026

Former Gov. Chris Sununu has announced that he will not be running for U.S. Senate, despite strong encouragement from national Republicans, including former President Donald Trump. In an interview on “The Pulse of New Hampshire,” Sununu stated that after much consideration, he and his family felt that it was not the right decision for them.

With Sen. Jeanne Shaheen announcing that she will not seek reelection next year, the race for her seat is already heating up. Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas has launched his candidacy, and Rep. Maggie Goodlander is also considering a run. Sununu was seen as the strongest Republican candidate for the seat, but has decided not to throw his hat in the ring.

Sununu has a history of toying with the idea of running for higher office and then ultimately deciding against it. Despite Trump’s recent endorsement and confidence that Sununu would win if he ran, the former governor has chosen to remain on the sidelines in this race. He expressed his belief that a Republican can succeed Shaheen and plans to stay involved in politics in a non-candidate capacity.

Former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown is currently the only major Republican considering a Senate run in 2026. Sununu’s decision not to run for Senate sets the stage for an interesting and competitive race to succeed Sen. Shaheen, with both parties looking to secure the seat in the upcoming election.
