Mike Pence to be honored with Profile in Courage Award for his actions on Jan. 6 – NBC Boston

Former Vice President Mike Pence is set to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for his refusal to comply with former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Pence will be honored for putting his life and career on the line to ensure the constitutional transfer of presidential power on January 6, 2021. Despite pressure from Trump to reject election results, Pence stood firm, stating he lacked the authority to do so.

During the Capitol riot, where some rioters reportedly called for Pence to be hanged, the former Vice President stayed behind to continue the ceremonial election certification once the rioters were cleared. Pence’s actions were deemed courageous by the Kennedy family, who stated that his decision echoes President Kennedy’s belief that political courage can change the course of history.

Pence has expressed deep humility and honor upon receiving the award, which will be presented at the JFK library in Boston on May 4th. This award, named after Kennedy’s book published in 1957, recognizes public officials who take principled stands despite potential consequences. Pence’s actions during the tumultuous period following the 2020 election have been commended as a demonstration of courage and commitment to upholding democracy and the constitution.
