Judge sets deadline for Trump administration to present evidence against Mahmoud Khalil

An immigration judge in Louisiana has ordered the federal government to provide evidence justifying its attempt to deport Columbia University student activist, Mahmoud Khalil. Khalil, a permanent U.S. resident and pro-Palestinian activist, was arrested in March and moved to a detention center on allegations that he would have serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States. The government claims Khalil withheld information about his affiliations and employment in his residency application.

Khalil’s attorney argues that the government has not produced any evidence to support these allegations and calls them absurd and unconstitutional. The Department of Homeland Security has accused Khalil of activities aligned with Hamas, a designated terrorist organization, and causing disruptions on college campuses.

The immigration judge has given the government 24 hours to provide evidence, with a hearing scheduled for Friday to determine if Khalil can be removed from the United States or released. Khalil’s legal team has expressed concerns about the rush to judgment and lack of due process in the case, especially as Khalil and his wife await the birth of their first child.

Khalil’s wife has written him a letter expressing her fears of him missing the birth of their child. The case has sparked controversy over the government’s handling of Khalil’s deportation, with Khalil’s lawyer calling for a fair and just legal process to be followed in the case.
