Appeals court stops rehiring of 24,000 federal employees

A federal appeals court has temporarily halted a lower court’s ruling that ordered the government to rehire approximately 24,000 probationary workers. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stated that the government is likely to succeed in showing that the district court lacked jurisdiction over the workers’ claims. The ruling effectively ends the injunction requiring the workers to be reinstated. This decision comes after the Supreme Court also issued a similar ruling to halt a California judge’s order to reinstate around 16,000 federal workers. The 4th Circuit decision stemmed from a broader ruling by a federal judge in Maryland who sided with a coalition of states, stating that the government did not follow proper procedures in firing the employees. The judge criticized the government for claiming to have fired the workers for individual reasons when in reality, they were all collectively dismissed without proper notice. The ruling highlights the ongoing legal battles over the government’s mass layoffs and the procedures followed in terminating employees. The pause on the lower court’s ruling will remain in effect until the government’s full appeal is decided.
