The Park Theatre will be showing the classic film “An American in Paris” on Saturday, April 26 at 7pm. The movie, winner of 6 Oscars and ranked among the American Film Institute’s 100 greatest American movies of all time, is a Technicolor tribute to the golden age of Hollywood musicals. Inspired by George Gershwin’s musical suite of the same name, the film is set in post-War Paris and features a romantic storyline, stunning set design, and a 17-minute ballet sequence starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The jazz-infused orchestral piece “An American in Paris” by Gershwin, which the movie is based on, premiered in 1928 and became one of his most famous compositions.
Gene Kelly, who not only starred in the film but also choreographed it, received an honorary Academy Award for his work. Co-star Leslie Caron was discovered by Kelly after seeing her perform in Paris. Despite criticism of its storyline and chemistry between the main characters, the film is praised for its dance sequences, music, and visual appeal. Tickets for the screening are $10 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. The Park Theatre is located in downtown Jaffrey, New Hampshire.
