Graduate student from Georgetown University detained by immigration authorities

Georgetown University graduate student Badar Khan Suri, who was teaching at the institution on a student visa, was detained by federal immigration authorities. He was arrested outside his home in Arlington, Virginia, with his visa revoked by the Department of Homeland Security. Suri’s lawyer called the detention “beyond contemptible” and stated that he has done nothing wrong. Suri is being held in Louisiana awaiting an immigration hearing. The reason for his detention is unknown.

Suri completed his Ph.D. in peace and conflict studies in 2020 and is known for his work in conflict resolution in areas such as Afghanistan and Iraq. He has traveled extensively in conflict zones in India, Pakistan, and the Middle East, focusing on religion, violence, and peace. Georgetown University has expressed support for Suri, stating that they are not aware of any illegal activity on his part and expect a fair legal process.

The Trump administration’s efforts to deport other students involved in protests, such as Mahmoud Khalil, have raised concerns about free speech and student visa rights. Suri’s attorney has filed a petition in federal court to determine the legality of his detainment. Students and scholars have criticized the government for targeting individuals like Suri who focus on conflict resolution and academic research in sensitive areas.
