Celebrated Canadian author Louise Penny has announced that she will be boycotting the U.S. due to President Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on Canadian goods. In a statement on Facebook, she called the tariffs “an unprovoked trade war” and said she cannot enter the U.S. until they are removed. Trump’s tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico have drawn criticism from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who called them “a very dumb thing to do.” Penny will no longer be doing in-person events in the U.S., including a planned launch event at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. She hopes Americans will attend her events in Canada instead. Penny is best known for her Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series, which was adapted into the Amazon Prime miniseries “Three Pines.” She also co-wrote the political thriller “State of Terror” with Hillary Clinton.
