Baby passes away, 10 become ill in listeria outbreak linked to pre-packaged meats

An outbreak of listeria linked to ready-to-eat meat products produced by Yu Shang Food, Inc. in South Carolina has resulted in the death of an infant and sickened 10 adults across four states. The CDC reported cases in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and California, with all victims identifying as having Asian heritage. The infant who died was a twin, as was their sibling who also passed away but whose death was not linked to listeria. The mother of the twins, who was pregnant at the time, also fell ill but recovered. Another unrelated infant also became sick but recovered. Among those affected, seven had shopped at stores selling Yu Shang Food products and two had eaten the company’s chicken. The products were recalled after Listeria monocytogenes was found during a routine inspection, with the CDC confirming a genetic match among cases. The recall includes various prepared meat products such as Braised Pork Belly and Seasoned Chicken Quarter Leg. Consumers were advised to discard the products and thoroughly clean their refrigerators. Listeria infection can be life-threatening for vulnerable populations, including older adults, those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, and, in severe cases, fatal infections.
