Suspect arrested for murder originally believed to be perpetrated by bear

A suspect in the killing of Dustin Kjersem, initially believed to have been caused by a bear attack in Montana, is in custody, according to Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is currently in custody on unrelated charges and is cooperating with detectives. Kjersem’s body was found in a remote area on October 12, with autopsy results revealing he died from “multiple chop wounds” in a vicious attack.

It has been confirmed that the suspect acted alone and there is no threat to the community. Kjersem, a 35-year-old resident of Belgrade, Montana, was last seen on October 10 and was found in his tent 2.5 miles up Moose Creek Road. The location where Kjersem was camping was not an official campsite, but a common forest service area used by hunters, outfitters, and others in the community.

Items were reported missing from the campsite, including a shotgun, revolver, cooler, and ax, sparking concerns among investigators. The sheriff expressed condolences to Kjersem’s family and the community, stating that their thoughts and prayers continue for them during this tragic time. The investigation into Kjersem’s killing is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to his death.
