Some analysts and voters believe Ayotte’s stance on abortion, as well as aggressive Democratic advertising suggesting she may seek to restrict access to abortion, could be key factors in her struggles. Ayotte’s support for defunding Planned Parenthood and her role in confirming conservative Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch have raised concerns among voters, especially women. New Hampshire bans abortion after 24 weeks with exceptions, and while Ayotte has stated she would not entertain changes to the law, some voters remain wary. Independent voter Marie Mulroy voiced her distrust, saying, “She has said the law won’t change, but there is no guarantee.” The upcoming race remains highly competitive, with Ayotte’s once-assumed advantages not proving to be enough to secure a decisive edge. The popularity of Vice President Kamala Harris in the state could also be a contributing factor. As the election unfolds, both candidates will need to address voters’ concerns and make their platforms clear to gain the trust and support needed to secure victory in the governor’s race.
