In Florida, around 700 women sought care at Planned Parenthood’s Miami office after the state’s abortion ban after six weeks of pregnancy. Some women had to travel to other states to end their pregnancies, while others were left with no choice. Dr. Chelsea Daniels is advocating for Amendment 4, which would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, as she has seen the impact of the ban on her patients. The amendment would guarantee the right to abortion before fetal viability. However, the unique hurdle in Florida is the 60% voter approval required for ballot amendments.
Opposition to Amendment 4 is coming from Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and his administration, who have ramped up efforts against the amendment. The state sent cease-and-desist letters to TV stations running ads supporting the amendment and produced its own campaign opposing abortion rights. Critics of the state’s abortion ban argue that it makes it difficult to prove exceptions and deters doctors from providing necessary care.
Advocates for Amendment 4 have been campaigning extensively, reaching out to voters through door knocking, phone calls, and text messages. Many voters were initially unaware of the abortion restrictions in Florida, but efforts to educate the public have increased awareness. Groups like Mi Vecino are focused on voter education and mobilization in Latino communities to ensure voters understand the implications of the ballot measure. Despite the challenges, those in favor of Amendment 4 are optimistic it will pass and restore abortion rights in the state.
