Severe Flooding in New Mexico Leaves 2 Dead and 309 Rescued

The New Mexico National Guard is conducting search and rescue operations in Roswell after record rainfall caused severe flooding in the area, leading to at least two deaths. Over 300 people have been rescued, with 38 taken to hospitals for treatment. The downtown area remains flooded, and all roads to and from the city are closed. Meteorologists are warning of more rain and potential flash floods. Several homes and businesses have been flooded, with vehicles swept away in floodwaters. Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington had to stand on top of his vehicle surrounded by water. A shelter has been set up at the Eastern New Mexico state fairgrounds for displaced residents. The National Guard is committed to helping Roswell as long as necessary, with 57 guardsmen and tactical vehicles capable of operating in flooded areas. The record rainfall of 5.78 inches broke the previous daily record set in 1901. Efforts are ongoing to assist those affected by the flooding and ensure the safety of residents in the area.
