A year into the genocide in Gaza, survivors of the destruction of al-Shifa Hospital recount the tragedy. The hospital, Gaza’s largest and most important, has been left as an empty shell after the latest Israeli siege. The majority of the buildings are extensively damaged or destroyed, and much of the equipment is unusable or reduced to ashes. The devastation has rendered the facility non-functional, limiting access to life-saving healthcare in Gaza. The emergency department, surgical, and maternity ward buildings have been extensively damaged by explosives and fire, with numerous graves dug outside the hospital and bodies partially buried on the compound.
Patients at al-Shifa Hospital endured abysmal conditions during the siege, facing severe shortages of food, water, healthcare, and sanitation, and being forced to relocate at gunpoint. The scale of destruction makes restoring minimal functionality seem implausible in the short term, but a partial reopening may be possible. This film by Zainab Walji sheds light on the devastation of al-Shifa Hospital and its impact on Gaza’s healthcare system. Filmed by Media Town in Gaza and edited by Jameel Hodzic, it aims to bring attention to the ongoing crisis in the region.
