British Film Institute issues apology to filmmaker following racial discrimination complaint

The British Film Institute (BFI) has issued an apology to filmmaker Faisal Qureshi after an independent investigation found that the BFI mishandled his racial discrimination complaint. The report by Verita, the complaints reviewer for National Lottery-funded organizations, stated that the BFI’s response fell short of expected standards. Qureshi, known for producing films such as Four Lions and Leaving Neverland, had filed a complaint alleging discrimination and incorrect information regarding funding access. While the report did not find evidence of systemic racism within the BFI, it acknowledged the mishandling of Qureshi’s complaint.
BFI CEO Ben Roberts has since apologized to Qureshi, acknowledging the shortcomings in handling the complaint and stating that improvements have been made to the complaints procedure. However, Qureshi remains skeptical of the BFI’s commitment to supporting filmmakers from the global majority and questions the significance of the apology and proposed meeting with Roberts. He likened the situation to dealing with an unrepentant school bully and criticized the organization for taking five years to address the issue.
Despite the BFI’s efforts to address the matter and reaffirm its commitment to being an anti-racist organization, Qureshi believes more substantial changes, such as leadership changes, are necessary for true accountability and progress. The case highlights ongoing challenges faced by filmmakers of color in the industry and the importance of addressing systemic issues of discrimination and bias.
