An Instagram challenge involving more than 310,000 participants asks users to have the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT cleverly insult their own posts. The challenge, known as “ask ChatGPT to roast your feed in one paragraph,” is shared through an Instagram story template resembling chain mail. Users download the ChatGPT app and send screenshots of their Instagram profiles to receive humorous insults such as “trying too hard to be spontaneous” or “like a midlife crisis.” Participants can then share the roasts along with screenshots of their profiles. The challenge can only be completed on the mobile app and requires a ChatGPT account. Instagram story templates have been used for various purposes, including spreading political messages, with the ChatGPT challenge being one of the first breakout instances of a cross-platform text-based AI trend. The creator of the challenge is a German “bookstagram” account that has not commented on the trend. ChatGPT was the first AI-text tool to gain popularity, sparking investment and innovation in the generative AI space. Meta launched its generative AI tools in response to ChatGPT’s success but has faced challenges in getting users to adopt them. Overall, the trend represents a shift towards text-based AI trends in social media, contrasting with previous trends involving AI-image filters or generated images.
